چکیده

1 This paper has been prepared as part of the project 'Globalisation, Production and Poverty', financed by a research grant from the UK Department for International Development. South Africa is one of two target countries in which the impact of globalisation is being studied in relation to the textiles industry; the other is Vietnam. For more information on the project, see: www.gapresearch.org/programme/profile-08.html. The UK Department for International Development (DfID) supports policies, programmes and projects to promote international development. DfID provided funds for this study as part of that objective, but the views and opinions expressed are those of the authors alone.

This paper examines the South African clothing industry’s recent export performance in the light of new trade arrangements with the US and the EU. This reflects forms of path dependency induced by various historical factors as well as by enterprises’ efforts to adjust to recent changes in the domestic market. ...

Endogenous Domestic Market Structure and the Effects of Trade Liberalisation in a Unionised Industry

We offer a new perspective to the unionised wage effects of unilateral trade liberalisation by considering endogenous domestic market structure. Hence, in contrast to the existing works, which focus on the short-run effects of trade liberalisation on unionised wage, we focus on more long-run effects by considering the effects of trade liberalisation on the domestic market structure. Trade liber...

CO2 emissions, energy consumption, income and foreign trade: A South African perspective

The effect of trade liberalisation on environmental conditions has yielded significant debate in the energy economics literature. Although research on the relationship between energy consumption, emissions and economic growth is not new in South Africa, no study specifically addresses the role that South Africa's foreign trade plays in this context. A surprising fact given trade is one of the m...
